YouTube Near You

August 4, 2009

With Microsoft Vine in beta testing, NBC rolling out ten new city sites, and our own link-up with MetaCarta, it seems hyperlocal content is a trend that’s here to stay.

The past weekend’s New York Times reports that YouTube is now joining the party, already having 200 providers signed up to its “News Near You” feature, although with most videos not coming traditional local TV stations. Whether the stations sign-up to YouTube’s new vision of local news remains to be seen, and as recent events in Iran have shown us how social media is empowering citizen journalism, the range of News Near You sources has the potential to be quite diverse.
